Suresh Kumar Raina is an Indian cricket player and he was popular regarding his aggressive style of left-hand batting and sometimes he bowls off-spin bowling. He was also famous in the cricket world due to his exceptional fielding talent. He was born on November 27, 1986. In all the formats of domestic cricket, he plays along the side of Uttar Pradesh team. In the Indian premier league he was the captain of Gujarat Lions team and now he is the vice-captain of Chennai Super King. He was also the captain of Indian international team and holds the record of a youngest player who captained the Indian international team.

In Indian cricket history, he is the first player from three who scored a century in all three formats of international cricket. At the age of 19, he made his One-day international debut against the Sri Lankan team in the month of July 2005. He made his T20 debut on 6 December in the year of 2006 against the team of South Africa. The test debut of Suresh Raina was in July 2010 after the five years of his ODI debut. He played his first test against the team of Sri Lanka and made a century in his first Test debut match. When India won the World Cup of 2011 he was the part of that winning Indian squad.

Early life of Suresh Raina

The living place of Suresh Raina is Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. His father is a military retired officer named Trilok Chand. The father of Raina is a member of Pandit community in Jammu and Kashmir and was originally belong to the Rainawari in Jammu and Kashmir while the mother of Raina belongs to Himachal Pradesh. He has three brothers named Naresh Raina, Dinesh Raina, Mukesh Raina and an elder sister named Renu. Suresh Raina is from a Military background so due to this reason his childhood was much disciplined and he played his cricket sessions very seriously and with a passion for cricket. He got his early education from his hometown and he used to be an excellent child with a disciplined lifestyle. His father trained him as a military man.

Suresh Raina has cricket talent from his childhood but when he decided to go further in the cricket field he moved from his hometown to the city of Lucknow near New Delhi during the year 2000 where he got admission in the Guru Gobind Singh Sport College. He polished his cricket skills in that college and got selection in the U-16 team of Uttar Pradesh and due to his extraordinary talent, he got the captaincy of that U-16 team. Due to his excellent performances, in the year of 2002, he got selection in the team of Indian U-19 at the age of 15 in the tour to England where he marked two half-centuries against England in the U-19 Test matches. Later he was selected in the tour to Sri Lanka with the U-17 team of India. In Ranji Trophy he made his debut at the age of 16 in 2003 but he cannot play other matches of that season due to some reasons. At the end of the year 2003 he was selected in the squad of U-19 team for the tour to Pakistan in the Asian ODI championship and after that championship, in 2004 he was selected for the U-19 ICC world cup. In that world cup, he made three half-centuries with one 90 scores on just 38 balls. After that U-19 world cup, he was awarded the Border Gavaskar Scholarship to get training in the Australian Cricket Academy. In the start of 2005, he made his first-class limited over format debut where he performed exceptionally and made 645 runs with an average of 53.75.

Raina played was played against Sri Lanka and West Indies in 2010 where he captained his team against Zimbabwe but in his captaincy India loss the first match against Zimbabwe by six wickets but the next match they won against Sri Lanka. Raina was also the captain in T20 series against Zimbabwe and they won their two-match series by 2-0 and he was the top scorer in that series. Two major players of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and R Ashwin played their debut matches in that T20 series in the captaincy of Raina.

In 2010 he was selected in the team for the series against Sri Lanka. He made his test debut in the second match against Sri Lanka and he was selected in that match due to the injury of Yuvraj Singh. In that match Sri Lanka declared their innings with the high score at 642 while India loses their four wickets on 241 then Raina joins the party with the Sachin Tendulkar and made his debut century in that match. In the third match of the series, Yuvraj was fit for playing but selectors retain the Raina for playing the third match. In the series against Australia in 2010 he cannot perform well and due to this reason he was dropped from the playing eleven and replaced with cheteshwar Pujara.

He was selected in the ICC world cup of 2011. The half of the tournament he was not selected in the playing eleven but against West Indies, he played the match in place of Virender Sehwag who got an injury in the previous match. In the quarter-final against defending champion, Australia Dhoni made a brave decision to replace Yusuf Pathan with the Raina where he 34 runs on 28 balls and helped India to chase the target and won the match. Against Pakistan, in the semi-final, he made another great performance by achieving the mark of unbeaten 36 runs and helped India to chase the target of 260 runs and he also took the catch of Younis Khan in that semi-final. He played exceptional in the important matches of the World Cup 2011 and he helped India to won that World Cup.
In the tour of West Indies in 2011 he was the captain of T20 series due to the injury of Gautam Gambhir which was selected as a captain in that tour but after the Injury, Raina got the chance to captained Indian team in T20 series. India won that series but the performance of Suresh Raina was very poor as he made runs with an average of 16.4 per match. In the test series against West Indies in the same tour, he made 232 scores.
In the year 2011, he was selected in the Test and ODI match series against England but one question raised in that series that who played the first match in Lord’s Raina or Yuvraj. In the practice match against England, he made a century due to which he secured a place in the first test and he made a half-century in the first test but in the next matches, his performance was very poor. That tour in England was totally the point of disappointment for the Indian team and Suresh Raina because he cannot perform in all the matches except one in which he made 84 runs.
England made a tour in the year 2012-2013 in which Raina performed remarkably and made 277 runs with the average of 92.33. He made four half-centuries in that series and India won that series against England. Raina became the 13th batsman of India who crossed the mark of 4000 runs in the ODI matches. He was awarded man of the series award and that award led him to the selection of first ten top cricketers in ODI rankings of ICC.

After the two years, he was selected in the squad of the Indian team for the Australia tour where he was selected in the final test match under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. In 2016 he was selected for the series against New Zealand but he cannot play the matches to the Chikungunya. He was played in the T20 team against South Africa in January 2018 he scored 43 on 24 balls and helped India to win the final match and series also. He got the man of the series award in that series against South Africa.

He was also a reputable player in the Indian Premier League and played for Gujarat Lions for some time and captained that team but now he is in the squad of Chennai Super Kings. In IPL he made many outstanding innings due to which he is famous in the IPL franchises.

International Achievements of Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina is the third player in the world and first in India who made a T20 century in his career. He is a single and first batsman who made a T20 century by coming on number three. He holds another excellent record that he made all three format centuries. Raina is the 12th Indian player who made a century in the test on his debut match. In T20s he is the first Indian player who achieved the mark of 6000 runs. Suresh Raina is the single Indian player who made centuries in the both ICC events T20 World cup and ODI world cup.
